Kandy, often referred to as the hill capital or Hill Country, holds a significant place in Sri Lankan history as the last stronghold of Sinhalese kings following periods of Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. Situated amidst mountain ranges like the Knuckles and Hanthana, Kandy boasts an elevation of 500 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of its surroundings including the artificial Kandy Lake and Udawatta Kele Sanctuary.

For Buddhists worldwide, Kandy holds immense importance as it is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. This monumental ensemble, comprising the Royal Palace and the Temple of the Tooth, is deeply intertwined with the dissemination of Buddhism and serves as a testament to the enduring practice of the religion.

Among Kandy's notable landmarks is the Bahirawakanda Buddha statue, commonly known as the Big Buddha, towering at 26.83 meters high. Positioned in the Dhyana Mudra, a posture of meditation associated with the Buddha's enlightenment, the statue offers a striking sight visible from various vantage points across the city.

A tour of Kandy typically includes visits to these historical sites along with the iconic Kandy Lake. Originally a stretch of paddy fields, the lake was transformed into its current form by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha in 1807. Legends abound regarding the lake, including stories of a small island at its center used by the king's harem for bathing, connected to the palace by a secret tunnel.
