Uva region can be mentioned as a region that lot of tea factories can be seen.Among those tea factories, Uva Halpewatte tea factory is the largest tea factory in the Uva region. The tea factory offers guided tours and it is a learning process of Ceylon tea for anyone who visits the factory. The factory was a part of the British era and dates back to the 1940s.

The Factory provides a range of supreme quality tea using the latest manufacturing techniques. The tour of the tea factory lasts for two hours beginning with a short lecture on the types of tea and the processing methods, which will go into the various stages and machinery in the actual working factory.The factory operates in the morning only, due to the climatic conditions and the appropriate time to commence the tour is around 9.00 a.m. The morning tours will help to get a better picture of the tea processing concept.

The tour will usually end with the sampling of a cup of hot tea on the top floor and this floor gives you a panoramic view of the vast stretch of mountains and tea bushes. There is a sales outlet which consists of all tea products and one could visit this shop after the tour. A variety of tea products are available packed in attractive cartons and pouches.

This tour is an interesting one as you could get a grasp of how tea is produced. It is recommended to use a tuk-tuk drive to visit the tea factory as you could get a view of the expanse of tea plantations on the way with tea pluckers nimbly using their fingers to pluck the tea and throw them accurately into the baskets behind them, no doubt would put a basketball player to shame.
